A lawyer and newspaper editor, Osmeña became the Government of Cebu in 1904. He resigned in 1906 and was elected to the new Philippines Assembly, where he served as founding Speaker until his election to the Senate in 1922. He also founded the Nacionalista Party, which went on to dominate domestic politics, In 1935, he was elected Vice-President of the Philippine Commonwealth. In exile with Quezon, he succeeded as President of the Commonwealth upon the latter’s death in 1944. He famously “returned” with General Douglas MacArthur and worked towards the rehabilitation of the war-torn country.
