Nicknamed "Noynoy", Benigno Aquino III hails from a family of prominent Philippine politicians. His father, Filipino Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr, was assassinated in 1983, and in the aftermath his mother, Corazon Aquino, was elected President, toppling the long and brutal regime of Ferdinand Marcos. His grandfather and great-grandfather both served in the Filipino legislature. Aquino's degree is in economics, and he worked in the private sector through his late 30s, rising quickly on account of his family name.

He turned to politics in 1998, and served nine years in the Filipino House, then two years in the Senate. He ran for President in a groundswell of support following the 2009 death of his mother, announcing his candidacy a month after her funeral. Billing himself as having "always viewed politics as a necessary vehicle for change", he won the 2010 election by a margin of almost six million votes out of 25 million ballots cast. Aquino took office as the fifteenth President of the Philippines on 30 June 2010.
