An automobile mechanic, Magsaysay was appointed military governor of the province of Zambales after his outstanding service as guerrilla leader during the Pacific War. He then serve two terms as Liberal Party congressman for Zambales before being appointed as Secretary of national Defense by President Quirino, He won the Presidency under the Nationalista Party during the elections of 1953, running against the former boss. As President, he was empowered to purchase large estates and distribute land to tenant farmers. Wildly popular as a leader, Magsaysay tragically died in a plane crash on March 17, 1957 at the age of 49.
